Wildlife at Tolmie State Park
Located on the Puget Sound, Tolmie State park is the ideal secluded beach. It is not too far off the beaten path and it is a wonderful place for those seeking to harvest the bounty of the shoreline. In my observation there are hundreds if not thousands of immature crabs. The beach is also home to numerous clams including the Horse clam, Eastern Soft shell clam, and Razor Clam. Tolmie state park is home to Geoduck, Mussels, and Oysters as well. Although I didn’t see many animals outside of birds crabs and the evidence of various clams, squid, seals, starfish scallops and other sea creatures are known to frequent this beach. If you live in the puget sound area and love a beach that is frequented by wild life than Tommie state park is the place.
It goes without saying to be respectful. Wildlife has always attracted me to beaches. I am not a swimmer and don’t do much recreational water activities. Tolmie State park is for nature lovers. The park is also for seafood lovers and I respect responsible harvesting. I visited during the week so not many people were there but there is no evidence of a large human presence. You can have peace at Tolmie State Park. Outside of the Hikers random beach dwellers and fishing boats, not much is happening at Tommie State Park.
The Beach
The actual Beach Is a mix of sand and rocks which doesn’t provide much comfort for relaxing. The water is calm which is perfect for skipping although not many skipping rocks can be found. There are a number of perfect beach logs which almost seem planted they are so perfect. The beach isn’t very big but it is big enough that you have space. There is a 1/2 mile trail to an alcove just west of the Lower enclosed shelter. Be wary of the tides if visiting this alcove because there is the potential to be trapped by high tide. in addition to the alcove trail there is a 2 mile trail through the forest. There is also trails leading from the upper parking lot to the beach. The trails are short and easy to the beach but are steep on the return.
